“POLICE SERVE AUTHORITIES”

Politics

The Journalists' Union of Armenia condemns the recent incident on Koryun-Abovian intersection and considers it illegal and refutable.

Reminder, at least a dozen activists, the supporters of Levon Ter-Petrossian, were reportedly detained by police on October 23. They were released late at night.

Yerevan Press Club member Mesrop Harutiunian notes that the police violated the RA Constitution which stipulates citizens’ right to freedom of expression. Under Article 27, each person has a right to get and disseminate information.”

“The activists were detained and severely beaten for distributing leaflets in the streets. This is brutality. I think the policemen should stand trial and bear responsibility for their deeds. I daresay the police serve the authorities’ interests,” Mesrop Harutiunian told A1+.

National Press Club Director Narine Mkrtchian also condemns the recent violation by the police and the authorities against citizens’ civil rights. “Their behavior is inadmissible on the eve of the election.”

Journalists’ Union Chairman Astghik Gevorgian thinks such a rough intervention cannot be justified. “I condemn any cruel treatment towards journalists,” she said.
