DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SPOT AVAILABLE FOR BROADCAST
Support A1+!Strasbourg, 26.06.2007 - A Council of Europe campaign against domestic violence is reaching out to the European public with the launch of a hard-hitting TV spot.
The spot - showing a woman facing the perils of urban crime only to come home to a violent husband - has been produced as a means of showing that it is the private home, not the public space, that is dangerous to women in Europe. It aims to mobilise the general public behind the "Campaign To Combat Violence Against Women, Including Domestic Violence".
Domestic violence is now being recognised as a major human rights abuse throughout Europe - with statistics pointing to the fact that one fifth to one quarter of women have experienced physical violence at least once during their adult lives, and more than one-tenth have suffered sexual violence involving the use of force. The 47-nation Council of Europe, the continent's leading human rights organisation, hopes the campaign will lead to a new awareness of the problem and a change in the way that women are protected in national law.
