OPPOSITION TOTALLY DEPRIVED OF AIR

Politics

Last Friday the Constitutional Court made a decision recognizing illegal the provisions of the NA Regulations according to which the Public Television has to broadcast the NA announcements and the question-answer between the Government and the NA, as well as the program «Parliamentary Week».

Let us inform you that this can mean the closure of the NA administration of public relations, together with the unemployment of five workers. By the way, they learned about the CC decision from the press only. The decision of the CC violates the main human right stipulated by the 27th article of the Constitution, the right of the society of freedom of information. Factually, this is violation of the rights of not only the opposition but also the whole society.

«The decision of the CC is anti-constitutional», said leader of the National Democratic Union Vazgen Manoukyan. He thinks that if the Public Television is for the society, and the society has the right to be aware of what is going on in the Parliament, the Public Television has to abide by the NA Regulations.

Leader of the Justice bloc Stepan Demirchyan thinks that this is another step restricting the rights of the opposition. According to him, the aim is to restrict the rights not before the Parliamentary elections, but before the Presidential elections. In any case, the NA can buy broadcasting time from any TV Channel, of course if they sell it.

Head of the Republican party faction Galoust Sahakyan accepts the decision of the CC. According to him, it restores the rights of free press. «If we consider that the press is free, there will be a need for contractual relations».

The ARF Dashnaktsutyun faction was not against the closure of the programs on TV. According to them, a competition must be held in order to decide which TV Channel must broadcast them.
