NATO EXPRESSES READINESS TO ASSIST

Politics

Daniel Fried, U.S. deputy state secretary on European and Eurasian issues, noted that NATO is ready to render assistance to «the regional wholeness of Moldavia and South Caucasus countries».

Mr. Fried assumes that the decision of NATO doesn't imply that «the North Atlantic Treaty gives freedom to the above-mentioned countries» and added «frozen conflicts in this part of post-Soviet territory can have only peaceful settlement».

«The assistance to the regional wholeness is not an appeal for rearmament and war launching», stated Mr. Fried.

He also spoke of the Georgia's membership to NATO. In his words, the U.S. administration wants to assist the Georgian authorities to achieve their aim. But it is beyond Georgia to decide as the country bears full responsibility.

After the summit of NATO, President Bush announced that the doors of NATO are open to Georgia and Ukraine.
