The members of the EU Troika and the RA Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan announced about the successful completion of the consultations about the Individual Partnership Action Plan of the European Neighborhood Policy.
According to Vardan Oskanyan, the agreement with the EU will make it possible to make Armenia more democratic and more prosperous. As for the content of the document, the officials preferred no to make it public. “Today we agreed upon the document. The final ratification of the document will take place in Brussels. After being signed it will become the property of the society”, Mr. Oskanyan explained.
The Finnish Foreign Minister claimed that the agreement will contribute not only to the development of the RA economy but also to the enhancing of political cooperation of the EU members and the countries of the region.
The document includes the plans for joint action for the coming five years. As for whether it will contribute to the RA membership in the EU, Minister Oskanyan said, “Today we are still far away from membership in EU, and it’s still too early to speak about it”. The Action Plan means cooperation with not only the EU countries, but also those of the region. Vardan Oskanyan mentioned that Armenia has nothing against cooperation with the countries of the region; the problem is that Azerbaijan is against it.
Welcoming the readiness of Armenia to cooperate on all the levels, Foreign Minister of Finland Erkki Tuomioja mentioned that the coming elections will be extremely important for the RA. «The EU and the international community will follow the course of the RA elections. We hope that the elections will confirm that Armenia is a democratic country».
As for the membership of Turkey in the EU, Erkki Tuomioja mentioned that it is a long process. «It will last about 10 years. Turkey has still much to do in order to live up to the EU standards». Mr. Tuomioja also referred to the tension in the relations of Russia and Georgia, «We continue our trip in the region: both in Moscow and in Tbilisi we will call on the sides to reduce tension. The EU is ready to support both sides».
