HAMLET GHOUSHCHYAN HAS RETURNED TO CONFESS

When Samvel Babayan, the ex commander of the Artsakh Defense Army was accused of the March 22, 2000 attempt on the life of NKR President Arkadi Ghoukasyan, TV Presenter Hamlet Ghoushchyan shot a film titled «Lord of Hell and Paradise» where he claimed that the ex commander is really guilty.

After a three-year absence from Armenia (he was in Moscow –editor) he rendered a press conference today to apologize for the false facts represented in the film. According to him, the fact had been given to him by the Prosecutor’s Office of the NKR and Attorney General Mavrik Ghoukasyan, by the Tax Inspectorate and the Artsakh Television. The film did not include the opinions of those who thought Samvel Babayan was innocent. According to Ghoushchyan, the film was shot in two days, edited quickly and broadcast as “time was pressing”.

According to him, he did not expect the film to cause such a hubbub and he was not aware of the inner tension in the country as he lived in Moscow.

After Samvel Babayan was set free in September 2004 Ghoushchyan understood that the accusations did not correspond to reality and “unable to bear the pangs of conscience” returned to Armenia in 2006, met Samvel Babayan and apologized. After a 40-minute meeting with Babayan, Ghoushchyan admired his pose and advised everyone to recognize him the way he did.

“It was an attitude of a general. He did not accuse me and said let the dead bury their dead,” Ghoushchyan said. He informed that he is going to shoot a new film about his apology. He is going to tell in the new film about a new document which refutes all the previous accusations and which he has been given only lately. The film will probably be titled “Samvel Babayan: A look from Aside” and will be broadcast by “AR” TV.

By the way, Ghoushchyan has returned to Armenia at the invitation of Hrant Vardanyan and will soon preside over the newly created “Media-Holding”. Asked by “A1+” if the apologies are meant for eliminating possible future problems in this post Ghoushchyan answered that the aim of the press conference was to refute the gossips and to be honest before his own conscience, and he has nothing to fear from.
