THE VOICE OF THE 5% WOMEN IS AUDIBLE IN THE PARLIAMENT
Support A1+!Only 7 of the NA Deputies are women and there are no woman Regional Governors or Mayors in Armenia. According to the coordinator of the USA constant mission in the RA Consuelo Vidal this is a bad phenomenon as the voice of the women is not audible.
“It is annoying that the participation of the Armenian women in the process of making decisions is so limited. If you want to make the voice of the Armenian women, i.e. the voice of the majority of the RA population audible they must participate in the political life of the country. Women are well aware of the wants in the country. They know what the families need,” she says.
The RA National Statistic Service with the assistance of the RA Ministry of Social Welfare, the development program of the UNO, the program “Gender and Policy in Southern Caucasus” and the Sweden Cooperation Agency on international prosperity published the next statistic booklet “Armenian Men and Women” in English and Armenian. The data of the booklet is based on the information data of the RA NSS.
This program is aimed at supporting the implementation of the gender policy in Armenia, the development of the women’s abilities, the provision of their active participation in the process of decision making and the assistance of the dialogue on the gender key issues.
According to the statistic data of 2004, the 51.8% of the constant population of the country were women and the 48% - were men. The average age for the first marriage in urban territories among women was 24.1 and among men – 27.8. As for the rural territories the age of women was 22.4 and the age of men – 27.1. The number of the students having average professional education was 30 483 in 2004 – 2005, the 69.1 % of which were women. The 55.8% of the people having higher education are women whereas the 71.9 % of the post graduate students are men which is determined by the army problems.
Women form the 39.7% of the executive branch bodies, the 37.8% of the regional management bodies and the 20% of the judiciary branch workers which is considerably small compared with the number of men. The survey data revealed that the 34% of women and the 65% of men are busy during the day with profitable work. The majority of the population is busy with the housework, by the way women daily spent 6 hours on it whereas men – an hour and 45 minutes. There are 5.3% women prisoners in Armenia.
