ARREST DID NOT FRIGHTEN THE ADVOCATE

Politics

«That Vahe Grigoryan has been set free doe not mean that we will shut up: we do not need presets, Vahe Grigoryan is innocent, he is no criminal, and we will continue to fight till the end», announced Tigran Atanesyan, the defender of advocate Vahe Grigoryan who fought for the rights of the residents of the Buzand street and spent 4.5 months in prison.

By the February 15 decision of the Court of Appeal Vahe Grigoryan was set free, but the criminal case has not been closed. Vahe Grigoryan announced in the press conference that his rights were violated in the isolator. In particular, he was prohibited to read the materials given by the residents of the Buzand street. Besides, he was deprived of the possibility to have connection with the outer world. Tigran Atanesyan reminded that in those in the isolator are given only official newspapers to read, like «The Republic of Armenia», but thanks to Vahe Grigoryan they gave him also «Aravot» and «Azg».

«There were serious violations in the isolator too», Vahe Grigoryan announced and informed that he used to work in the prosecutor's office and knows well that they do not have the right to keep him in the same cell with other accused. In this case he was kept together with two foreign citizens, one of whom was a recidivist. The advocate noted that it was done in order to exercise pressure upon him.

The advocates assess the decision of the Court of Appeal as a small victory, but they also note that if the advocates are so defenseless in Armenia, what can we say about common citizens? By the way, Tigran Atanesyan informed that he has been told that if Vahe Grigoryan were not an advocate, he would have been sentenced to imprisonment long ago.
