18 YEARS AGO KARABAKH PREDESTINED ITS INDEPENDENCE

Politics

Exactly 18 years ago on February 20 the Deputies’ Council of the Nagorno Karabakh Sovereign Region adopted a decision in a special session “to apply to the Azeri Soviet Socialistic Republic and to the Armenian SSR to give the NKSR to Armenia”. This special session marked the beginning of the combat for the independence of Karabakh.

Nevertheless, on February 21 the Soviet Union Central Committee made a decision contradicting the principle of the self-determination of nations causing acts of complaints in Stepanakert and Yerevan.

By now it is not yet clear whether the right of Karabakh of self-determination will be respected or not. The reason is that a part of the international community considers the principle of the territorial integrity superior to that of the self-determination of nations. Nevertheless, both principles are equal from the point of view of international rights.

The 18-year-olf conflict is not yet settled, although the temporary cease-fire is kept, and Karabakh is de facto an independent republic.

It is noteworthy that the negotiations of Kosovo and Serbia started today, as Kosovo too fights for the right of self-determination.
