TIGRAN TOROSYAN, “PACE RESOLUTIONS WERE BETTER THAN THE SITUATION IN OUR COUNTRY”

Politics

Five years ago, on January 25, 2001, Armenia became member of PACE on the condition to honor several commitments, including the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. The same condition was put before Azerbaijan.

“In our life this was not the membership in the following international organization but the choice of out future path. Unfortunately this fact is not fully realized. After all, what is important for Armenia is that we must decide our place in the international community, in this or that family”, the head of the Armenian delegation to PACE Tigran Torosyan says.

According to him, we have choice, as “Good as our relations with the Asian countries might be, I am convinced that by the highest standards our choice must be the similarity of culture and civilization. In this case Europe has no alternative for Armenia”.

Mr. Torosyan has been head of the Armenian delegation to PACE since 2003. He did not want to comment on the work of the first delegation as «The first attempt simply gives us the possibility to find out what we must do and what we must not». Evaluating the work of his delegation, Mr. Torosyan says that they have had achievements and raised the quality of the work.

«For the last few years we have not had resolutions unfavorable for the country. Sometimes they were even better than the situation in our country. I think every resolution adopted has helped Armenia», Mr. Torosyan says considering this the result of the effective work of the delegation.

By the way, the Armenian delegation has not yet decide how to celebrated the fifth anniversary of the membership in PACE. «I think we can gather together at the end of the day and speak about it», Mr. Torosyan said.
