GAS ISSUE TO BE SETTLED STAGE-BY-STAGE

Politics

Today Deputy Minister of Trade and Economic Development Gevorg Vardanyan and economist Eduard Aghadjanov argued on the possible rise in prices for gas and its consequences.

The government representative considers that its too early to raise the question yet. He stressed that even if Russia raises the price for the gas imported to Armenia the government will never allow abrupt fluctuations, the rise is prices will be stepwise and alleviating factors will be worked out for the vulnerable sector of the population.

Economist Eduard Aghadjanov agreed that Russia should raise the gas price since it’s going to enter the World Trade Organizations. However he disagreed that the rise in prices is conditioned by the demands of the world market. “Russia is going to set the price at $110 for cubic meter for Armenia while the price fixed for Belarus is $46.68,” he said. He supposed that this move by our strategic ally is simply a way of exerting political pressure, what resembles the policy implemented in the soviet period.
