“NO COMMERCE WHEN IT COMES TO KAHABAKH”

Politics

Based on the mild evaluation of the results of the Constitutional referendum by the European observers, the opposition predicts that in 2006 there will be pressure upon Armenia to solve the Karabakh conflict not in favor of Armenia. We tried to find out the point of view of the NA deputy speaker Tigran Torosyan.

- I think that supposed commerce is absurd – we will treat you mildly and you will solve the problem quickly. In my opinion, both Armenia and Azerbaijan will do everything to settle the conflict as soon as possible, but they will naturally keep to their principles. The year 2006 is peculiar by the fact that there will be no elections in Armenia and in Azerbaijan, and it can be favorable for the solution of the Karabakh conflict. But this cannot be enough to solve the conflict in 2006 as both Armenia and Azerbaijan and the Minsk group co-chairs will have to carry out complicated work for that purpose.

- Does it mean that the West cannot make us adopt an offer which is against the interests of Armenia?

- Of course. If anyone were able to force us anything, they would have done it for the last 17 years. To my mind, Armenia and the Nagorno Karabakh Republic have been in situations much worse than this for the last 17 years, but life shows that if there is no acceptable solution no pressure can prove efficient.
