TURKISH HISTORIAN IS NOT AGAINST THE OPENING OF THE BORDERS

Politics

«Frankly speaking, I am sure that in the negotiations of the membership of Turkey into the EU the issue of recognizing 1915 will not become an official demand», said the US Marshal Fund Ankara office head Suat Kinikliogli during the seminar titled «The International Experience of European Integration and the Perspectives of European Neighborhood Policy for Armenia» which took place in Yerevan today.

Mr. Kinikliogli claimed that unless the Nagorno Karabakh conflict is settled, there can be not a single word about the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border. He even offered his own variant of settling the conflict, «If Armenia returns at least 3-4 of the 7 occupied areas, I am sure that the Armenian-Turkish border will be opened».

NA deputy Shavarsh Kocharyan tried to find out if it is possible to open the Gyumri-Kars railway. Suat Kinikliogli himself is not against its opening but he reminded that Armenia has already been left out of the Baku-Tbilisi Ceyhan oil pipeline program. «If we speak about 1915, we will not reach the railway. There is along story between them and the railway can be built in 1-2 years only», he said.

Politician Stepan Grigoryan offered Mr. Kinikliogli to start a dialogue between the two countries without any intercessors. Mr. Kinikliogli claimed that the dialogue has already started, as he is in Armenia.

At the end Mr. Kinikliogli wondered why the international community does not want Turkey to become member of the EU, why they do not see and believe that during the last three years Turkey has become more democratic.
