KARABAKH ISSUE DISCUSSED IN PARIS

Politics

Yesterday the PACE ad hoc committee on Nagorno Karabakh held its sitting in Paris. Armenian National Assembly Vice Speaker, head of the Armenian delegation to PACE Tirgan Torosian rated the historical story of the conflict presented during the discussions as “interesting and balanced, forming objective conception of the conflict.”

In the course of the discussions the PACE co-chairs once again noted that both principles of the Helsinki agreement – territorial integrity and the right for self-determination should be applied for the settlement of the conflict. OSCE Special Representative for Nagorno Karabakh Goran Lennmarker reiterated the key arguments of his report stressing the possibility of providing Nagorno Karabakh with a status of wide autonomy within Azerbaijan.

Head of the Armenian delegation to PACE Tigran Torosian in his turn emphasized that no positive outcome can be achieved without participation of Karabakh’s representatives in the settlement process. At the same time he noted that the resolution of the Karabakh conflict is impossible without applying the principle of the right of self-determination.

Upon completion of the discussions the committee continued its work. The next meeting was scheduled for December, however the Armenian and Azeri delegations are likely to meet during PACE Fall Session.
