Support A1+!Who should appoint the Defender of Human Rights?
We surveyed 100 people in the Yerevan streets May 22-26. 55% of the respondents consider that the Ombudsman should be elective. 23% hold the opinion that the human rights defender should be appointed by the parliament. One of them said that it is more democratic, since various political forces are represented in the parliament. However all of them (78%) are categorically against the appointment of the President by the President. To remind, incumbent Ombudsman Larisa Alaverdyan was appointed by President Robert Kocharyan.
Only 5% consider that the human rights defender should be appointed by the President. 17% of the respondents had difficulty in answering. Some of them suppose that the Ombudsman being either elective or appointed will not be able to defend human rights under the incumbent regime.
