STRUGGLE FOR ARMENIAN

Politics

The Georgian Parliament has adopted with the first reading the draft law about the secondary education. According to A-info, it was stated in the draft law that in the Georgian state schools the education would be in Georgian (in Abkhazian – in the Abkhazian also).

As a result of the complaint of the national minorities of the country, the Parliament has introduced a special point in the law about the existence of schools teaching the language of the national minorities in places with population of that very minority.

Van Bayburdyan, delegate of the Parliament, mentions that the point could be introduced in the continuation of «Georgian and Abkhazian», but this time too the Parliament gave way to the pressing.

It is also stated by the law adopted with the first reading that in those schools in the languages of the national minorities where the students know the Georgian language, some subjects (History and Geography of Georgia) must be taught in Georgian.

In the draft law the Parliament gives the possibility of schools to teach several subjects by their own choice. This gives the Armenian schools the possibility to teach Armenian history.

The law will soon enter the Parliament for he second hearing.
