On February 7, Armenian Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan met with Frank Engel, a member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg in Brussels. During the meeting, the two men discussed issues related to the freedom of expression, journalistic activities and their work in Artsakh. Frank Engel stressed that journalists’ activities in Artsakh have immense importance and they should be enhanced. He added that the extradition of blogger Alexander Lapshin cannot and should not affect further visits to Artsakh; they must become more frequent. The MEP noted that the Human Right Defender of Artsakh and civil society should be involved in international discussions and meetings. Arman Tatoyan stressed the importance of Frank Engel’s position and said he is making every effort to boost visits to Artsakh and involvement of Artsakh’s democratic institutions. In this regard, significant agreements have been reached concerning further mutual cooperation. Arman Tatoyan and Frank Engel also discussed the human rights situation in Armenia and regulations of the new law on Human Rights Defender.
