Economist: Russia is weakening, Armenia can strengthen relations with the EU
The rumors that the economy of Armenia can benefit in the background of Russian-Turkish relations aren’t reasoned, thinks economist Ashot Yeghiazaryan. He is convinced, Armenia hasn’t got the power to replace Turkey in the Russian market, “It will be the way it was during previous years. Armenia has already reached the peak of export to Russia, so are our capabilities.” Ashot Yeghiazaryan recalls Armenia doesn’t have a direct overland route to Russia, the checkpoint of Lars closes once in a year, and the air route of our country is simply uncompetitive, “If we take into account that Armenian manufacturers have problems with high prices of electricity and gas, we become uncompetitive, as the cost price of our products becomes very high for the Russian market.” Though, the economist adds that from the global point of view Armenia benefits from the escalation of these relations, if we don’t take into account that political and military processes may begin, “We benefit as two countries are weakening. Turkey becomes more controllable and manageable by the West, and Russia continues weakening economically and it means that Armenia can strengthen the economic relations with the EU.”
