Aram Sargsyan: Everything is 'in a state of neglect' in new constitution
A few days before the referendum on the constitutional amendments, there are still many controversial issues in the draft and a lot of questions which have been left unanswered, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia Aram Sargsyan said on December 4. He says there are faults in provisions concerning security and government system issues, as well as the social sphere. “The current Constitution also remained unfulfilled. Have there been any attempts to make Armenia a social state? Of course, not. We had submitted a proposal to set a threshold for the minimum wage, but it was not accepted. Everything is in a state of neglect in this new version,” Mr Sargsyan said. He does not understand why the idea of the second round. Nor does he care whether Serzh Sargsyan will hold an office or not. “The important thing is that we see the system changed. I do not see what direction we are going to take.” Specialist in religious studies, theologian Vardan Khachatryan says when drafting the new Constitution, people were to be asked how they see Armenia, for example in 2020. “Oligarchs have coalesced with the government. I believe we should say “No” to the draft constitution because there is ambiguity in issues concerning national security.” Republican MP Lernik Aleksanyan says there is no reason for concerns, especially in view of the safety of Armenia and Artsakh. “The President also announced that all steps in that direction will be cautious and well-calculated.” The Republican lawmaker says the Constitution does not resolve problems, it only enables people to find solutions to problems.
