EcoLur: Freshwater Springs Getting Dry in Sisian Region

Social

Tsghuk community, Syunik Region, has always had water supply and could never imagine that it may experience problems: freshwater springs, which supply water to the village, are getting dry. “There are 5 SHPPs in our area, both in our area and in Sarnakunq. We don’t even know who’s who: our land areas are attached to each other. We can see that all the spring and rivers are getting dry,” the local resident said. EcoLur: Are you sure it’s the result of SHPP operation? Resident: I’m sure by 100%. There are several SHPPs on the Dali River, the water flows through the pipes, the river has got dry, most springs have also got dry, we can’t even water the cattle, as we don’t have water. EcoLur: What about the social state of the village? Have they offered any social programs? Resident: I haven’t seen something like that in our village - I haven’t seen any benefits from it, I don’t know. Some four people are employed at the SHPPs, nothing else. I haven’t seen any aid. Our village is getting empty, there are few people in the village – many people left the village because of this hard situation. There is little youth left, mainly elderly people stay here. This year we didn’t even have first grade at school, last year there was one pupil in the first grade. There is no way to live here all surrounded with mountains. Villages work with losses, EcoLur reports.
